I changed the behavior of Brighton, Machyua, and Lara at the escape point in Chapter 4. Now, depending on the progress of the event, they cannot escape.
The following changes have been made:
- Brighton, Machyua, and Lara can no longer escape until the door to the room where Leif is located is opened. If the escape command is executed, they will remain in place and their actions will end, with a monologue which tells the player that they cannot leave now.
- When Brighton and Machyua escape, they will say the confirmation monologue if there are still citizens on the map. (Citizens are treated as non-existent if they are being carried by someone else.)
- When Lara escapes, the confirmation monologue is given if there is a room with citizens that is not open.

I made this change because they could ignore Leif and leave, which caused a soft lock. Based on Asbel's reaction in Chapter 4x, they likely haven't been told about Prince Leif's presence. Therefore, it is purely for the convenience of the game that they cannot leave the map without opening Leif's room. Since players would not normally make this choice, I ignored the inconsistencies with the story and decided that the convenience of the game should be prioritized.
It's lame that they came to help the citizens but abandoned them, even if the player caused it to happen. However, it would also be problematic if they could not leave the map and die because they did not abandon the civilians. Therefore, as they escape, monologues about their reluctance to abandon the remaining citizens but they must do it will appear.
